The Global Studies News Team would like to thank our contest winners for their outstanding poems. We all enyjoyed reading them and hope to hear from everyone else.

1st Place Winner:

You and Me

by Yanelly T orres

Remebering the day when I first met you

Was like seeing an angel broughten to me

You shined and amazed me so much

I gott the courage to say that all i asked for was one chance

Time flew by and we found our romance

A treasure of love was between our two hearts

We grew up from our childness and became just one

We became older and you caught a disease

Thats the night i gave you kiss

But that didnt matter what matter to me

So im here to say that i took this tome

Not forgetting you and that youll always be my number one love

2nd Place Winner:

To My Tia Susanna

by Ernesto Lopez

You are the one I will always adore

Even Though you’re not here anymore

I remember when you went to heaven

Because how could i forget i was only eleven

I remember one minute i was by the school’s rail

Then next all i heard was my cousin’s wail

When they told me you died i was filled with sadness and grief

But when they told me you’re in heaven that gave me some relief

Because how can someone so Nice and sweet go to hell

You shined bright like a Pearl inside a shell

I’m sure that you’re in gods embrace

i really wish that i could see the smile on your face

This poem is done and there is nothing more to say

I hope that i get to see you on my final day

The East LA Classic was, is and always will be the most memoriable rivalry football game of all time.

All football players, regardless of whose side it is, Garfield or Roosevelt, were preparing to fight once again in the 78th annual East L.A. Classic Football Game on October 26, 2012. They all worked hard, played hard, and hitted hard to prepare for this game. Everyone outside the football field even started to talk about what would happen on that day. Still, nobody knew what would happen; that was the fun part.

All football players were ready, fans from both sides began to show up at the stadium, and the war between James A. Garfield and his football team and Theodore Roosevelt and his football team was about to begin. The war started at 7:30. The revolution had begun.

Each side was preparing their soldiers of war in the ELAC football stadium. There were about 20,000 people from both sides who supported their own respected team. Almost everyone was there: from the cheerleaders and drill team to the JROTC; from the students from Garfield and Roosevelt to the news reporters; from band to obviously the football players.

In the game, both offensive and defensive sides worked hard in order to gain touchdowns for their team and prevent Roosevelt from getting any. Near the end, however, there was a crucial situation in defense. Roosevelt was close in getting a touchdown. But lucky for us, Carlos Munoz, aka Potter #85, took control of the game and beat the Roosevelt roughriders. Thanks to him, Garfield defeated Roosevelt 7-0 and earned the gold once again.

For the 3rd time in a row, Garfield High School is the Eastern League Champions. I bet the Roosevelt roughriders are once again angry and jealous for once again losing to the bulldogs of East LA. Still, just because we won doesn’t mean we have to rest. Now the football team has the city-playoffs to win. If they succeed, they could also be the city-state champions. Don’t worry though. The football team will work hard in order to fight these battles of the city-playoffs and win them, all leading up to the city-state championship on December.

They have new players to join the brawl, powerful, mean, nasty, and physical players, and of course Potter. With all of the best players, we could easily have strength in numbers, win the finals, and become the city-state champions. I hope you support the football team in winning this tournament.

BULLDOGS HASTA LA MUERTE!!!

There are many football players all around the school and football field. Some are extremely good, some are helping out their teammates, and others are trying the best they can do. There is no such thing as a best player or a worst player, but there is such thing as a great team full of discipline, confidence, and heart.

This team is one of them.

One football player has all of this experience and even more ever since he first played football. He is Larry Ravello.

Larry Ravelo, #40, is a senior football player with a balanced combination of skills, traits, and knowledge. As a fullback, he’s been playing football since freshmen year, or 9th grade, or basically for 4 years. He had a great experience playing football in 9th grade until he got hurt a few times. However, that didn’t stop him. He kept on playing football for the next few years of his life until he became a senior. Now as a senior, he is one of the captains of the football team.

He is one of the few lucky people to have this position because this proves he can work hard without complaining, he cares about his team, regardless of the players and their ranks, and he has leadership, discipline, and faith.

In the football field, he’s one powerful fullback. In school, he has good grades; in fact, he has a 3.4 G.P.A. Larry balances himself between football and school by going to football practice, going home to do homework, sleeping after he’s finished, and being ready the next day. Considering this is Larry’s last year of playing football, he becomes more prepared and confident at playing football in his 12th grade year than on his 9th grade year.

Now with the East LA Classic coming along, Larry becomes prepared to play in his final game in high school. Nervous, but excited, he gets ready to fight in this war against Roosevelt High School. After the Classic, he plans to play college football because he enjoys playing the sport, and he wants to be one of the best football players of all time. This won’t be easy, but he will never give up in his football journey in the future when he goes to college. This is one of the main reasons why he’s a captain and he likes to play football in his life.

So yes, Larry Ravelo was, is, and will be one of the greatest football players of all time. He has MANY friends, great grades, excellent football experience, and a pure heart. With this progress, he can even be a football player from a legendary team on the NFL.

He even helps me out in many situations, so he’s also a nice, respectable guy.

This Friday, October 26, 2012 was The Classic between Garfield and Roosevelt and Garfield was looking for nothing else than to win. The varsity game kicked off at 7:30 and the spirit could be felt in the stands. Everyone was happy and excited because the much anticipated game of the year had finally started.

The game started with Garfield receiving possession of the football. They managed to make some great offensive plays to start off the game including a 15 yard pass that left them 30 yards from the inzone. Unfortunately, they made some sloppy plays; however, they were left within field goal range.

The bulldogs had the opportunity to get in the scoreboard but the fans saw as the football was kicked just slightly to the left and the kick was ruled no good. The quarter came to an end with no score.

The second quarter saw much defensive deadlock. However, 7 minutes into the quarter, an overthrown pass from the Roosevelt quarterback saw his wide receiver tip it only for it to be intercepted by the Garfield defense and be carried an impressive 60 yards. The play led to a scoring drive for the bulldogs with 4:24 remaining in the quarter.

The half came to an end with Garfield leading by a single touchdown, 7-0.

It was time for halftime and the Garfield Band and the Drill team put the name of Garfield up high. Of course, the Roosevelt drill team and band went up first, summoning many “boo’s” from the Garfield side. As an unbiased observer, I have to say they deserved those “boo’s.” As a Garfield supporter, I have to say Garfield completely owned Roosevelt. Next it was Garfield. The Drill team was just magnificent, drawing cheers from the crowd, and the band did great.

The second half started with a third quarter that saw a defensive battle with very little offense. The true fun was in the stands with the classic beachballs being tossed around and the unsuspecting spectator or two being hit with the ball as everyone laughs and is just having a great time.

The fourth quarter was much of the same story. However, it came to a dramatic ending after the ball was fumbled by Garfield and turned over. There were 2 minutes left and it seemed like the game was going down to the line. Roosevelt was fighting to take the game to overtime, however, Garfield had something to say and that was,”Too bad Roosevelt, but this Classic is ours.”

The Garfield defense held Roosevelt when they were in the red zone with some outstanding defensive plays that brought the Garfield fans to their feet chanting, “East L.A., East L.A., East L.A.” because they knew that the Classic was now ours.

The clock was run down and the final scoreboard read 7-0. Garfield took a narrow but hard-fought win in this year’s Classic.
