The word sport is defined as an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. It sounds plain and simple; however, sports are much more than that. Sports have become a part of our lives and one couldn’t imagine a world without them.

Sports have a power of bringing friends and family together. Sports bring out that intense passion, that exhilarating feeling, that unconditional emotional attachment to a team whether they win or lose, from all of us. However, what do we benefit from this? Nothing, and we are aware of it. We don’t get paid to support our teams. On the other hand, we are the ones that pay for merchandise and to be able to see our teams play. What do we get if our team wins the Superbowl, the World Series, the NBA Championship, the Champions League, or any other championship, other than bragging rights? The answer again is nothing, but we do so for this simple reason, for the love of the game. Who doesn’t enjoy that feeling of suspense as the game is still undecided in the final minutes of the game? That moment where the game is in overtime, and your team has the possibility of winning or losing and has you at the edge of your seat. Who doesn’t enjoy watching Kobe Bryant make a game winning 3point shot as the shot clock expires? How does he do that, is what we all ask. We don’t comprehend how he is able to do it, we just come to the conclusion that he is from out of this world. But that is the magic of sports. It brings excitement to our leisure time.

Sports make us see unbelievable things  that we don’t see anywhere else. For example, who doesn’t gasp in astonishment as Messi  takes on three defenders single handedly and then  scores a chip shot over the goalie who has nothing  left to do but watch the ball as it enters into the back of the net?

What about when Albert Pujols scores home run after home run? Or when Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, or any other quarterback passes the ball with such accuracy that it ends in a game winning touchdown. These moments impact our lives. We are left in awe. We smile a little and wonder at the thought of how it is these sports stars are able to do this. We admire them, yet we envy them, for we wish we were able to play our favorite sports with such magnificence and skill. This is the world of sports. A series of games that revolve around our lives. Whether it is for fun, entertainment, for union, or for the love of the game; sports are more than a simple game.
